The Warrior was one of the armoured cruisers which preceded the Grand Fleet into action.  Within a quarter of an hour she was crippled, but before that happened she had put up a fight which will live in history. She first engaged two cruisers, and at one time she was fighting six adversaries, as well as a serious fire amidships, for four enemy battleships came up and turned their guns on her.  Yet she managed to sink the two cruisers and a destroyer as well, and then, as she lay, a hopelessly battered hulk, waiting for the shells that would finish her, the Warspite came to her rescue.  By this time over 100 men of her crew had been killed or wounded, a shell had  crippled her engines, her deck was a mass of twisted steel, and she was badly holed below the waterline and slowly sinking.  Eventually a hydroplane parent ship, the Engadine, took her in tow, and tried to get her into port, but during the night heavy seas rose, and ten hours after coming out of action the wounded Warrior had to be abandoned to her fate.
