The Scandal. 1892-93.

  1- Three little tongues went awagging,
  2- And babbled of a mystry of portentious moment
  3- The cats preached it from the rooftops
  4- And the village cus sat in solemn conclave and discussed its meritts
  5- Then wispered comment gave way to inquisitive enquiries, which enquires,
  6- close aquaintance disclosed the Scandal.


  It's in a field not far from here-
  My dears, believe it if you can-
  That she was seen- quite late, I hear,
  Talking to such a funny man.

  The very cats meet on the roof
  Each night the matter to discuss,
  And by their howls and yells give proof
  How much they sympathise with us.

  The curs upon the village green
  (My information leaves no doubt)
  In frequent conclave have been seen
  Trying in vain to work it out.

  But since we know the trysting-place,
  We'll soon find out the secret now,
  With curs and cats we'll thither race,
  A goodly company, I trow.

  Look, there he's waiting !  We can guess
  Whom he is waiting for, you know.
  How stiff he is :  he's- yes-no-yes :
  A scarecrow !  There, I told you so.
