Never before has the art of mining been carried to such an elaborate degree as in the present war.  For hundreds of miles along the western front there extends an elaborate series of tunnels, know as "galleries."  These are permanent underground highways, running more or less parallel with the trench systems.  From these galleries the mine proper- a much smaller shaft, just big enough for a man to crawl along it- is driven beneath "No Man;'s Land" in the direction of an enemy redoubt or other coign of vantage.
