This month has seen the beginning of the fifth month of the battle of Verdun, in which sanguinary struggle  the Germans are estimated to have lost 415,000 men, with the net result that their line has advanced from three to five miles, leaving the great mass of the Verdun defences still intact.  So far the Germans can only claim to have captured two of three strategic points out of a couple of dozen. Nothing can exceed the valour of the French defence, and out Allies knew from the first, as Mr. Asquith atated the other day, that Sir Douglas Haig is "ready and eager to render them help whenever and wherever and in whatever shape they desire."
