What the Germans already refer to as "the most terrible battle in the world's history" has not progressed as they had planned.  The battle for Verdun raged for ten days, during which the enemy sacrificed at least 150,000 men to gain some three miles on a front of about ten - most of which the French evacuated of their own free will in order to fall back upon their real fortified positions, for which they could the better decimate the Germanic hordes.  All the essential defences of Verdun remain in the hand of our Allies, and bitter was the disappointment of the Germans to find, after their enormous sacrifice of life to gain the hill of Douaumont and its supposed fort, that this fixed defence work had already been dismantled, and had served as a trap for their own Brandenburgers when the French, in their Impetuous charge, swept round and beyond the position and cut off their retreat.
