The door to the East is gradually being closed in the face of the Turco-Teutons,and all their intrigues in Persia and beyond are powerless to prevent the drawing together of the Russian and British forces. After their brilliant feat at Erzerum the main army of the Russians swept steadily onwards towards Bitlis, while the forces operating in Persian territory advanced from Hamadan to Kermanshah, thus approaching within 200 miles of the British force on the Tigris.  Owing to the floods, the relief of Kut has been delayed ; but, in spite of this, General Aylmer last week managed to make a further and unexpected advance, with the result that the distance between the relieving column and the beleaguered garrison has been reduced to twenty miles.  Simultaneously another successful attack was made at Nasiriyeh, an important strategic point on the Euphrates.
