Since the walling-up of the Golden Gate this has been the only Gate on the Eastern side of the City Walls. It is called after the first Christian martyre who is said to have been stoned to death at this spot.  Its Arabic name is Bab Sitti Maryam, or Gate of Our Lady Mary, because the road leads to the tomb of the mother of God.  It was in sight of this gate that Richard the Lionheart invited his twenty councillors to choose between the capture of Jerusalem and Cairo.  The chose the latter much to Richard's disgust, and the main object of the Crusade was never achieved.
