This distinguished officer of the York and Lancaster Regiment not only took part in the battles of El Teb and Tamai, but was well known for his organising ability in Rhodesia before he left England to form the smart corps which has been fighting against the Boers near the River Limpopo.  Educated at Eton (as were his father and grandfather before him), he joined the Army in 1876.  It will be remembered he was in command of the smart regiment he raised in South Africa when Sir F. Carrington and Colonel Baden-Powell went out in 1896.  Recent telegrams seem to show that Colonel Plumer may at this juncture have an opportunity of succouring Baden-Powell at Mafeking.
