   a- Louis Percival and Mrs. Ralston discovering that the love they felt for each other some twenty years before has never waned, and that their separation had been the work of a forger who had sent each of them a letter in the other's handwriting.  This forger was "Jim the Penman," now Mrs. Ralston's husband.
   b- Agnes Ralston, on the day of her marriage to Lord Drelincourt, finds her mother in tears at the discovery that the bride's father is a criminal who lives by forgery, and has by that means just stolen the Delincourt family jewels, thus even robbing his son-in-law.
   c- The scene between James Ralston (the "Penman") and his wife when the latter learns his true character.
   d- "Jim the Penman" and his fellow-conspirator, Baron Hartfeldt, fall out over the Drelincourt jewel plunder. The struggle brings on what is a fatal attack for Ralston-as is seen in our illustration, No. 6.
   e- The detective, Capt. Redwood, looking up innocently when on the track of the evil-doers.  The Captain's pose is one of somnolent vacuity, and a favourite trick of his is to affect to fall asleep in company.
   f- The death of "Jim the Penman" on his daughter's wedding day.  This leaves his wife free to marry her old love, Louis.  In the doorway the sleepy detective is seen, now wide awake, with his captive, Baron Hartfeldt.
