A Red (Herring) Leiter Day with the "Scratch'em." 1904.

For Sale is a Full Page removed from "The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, May 7th, 1904," showing the Following short story illustrated by G. H. Jalland, called "A Red (Herring) Leiter Day with the Scratch'em."

(Unknown to our M.F.H.. certain members of the Scratch'em, in conjunction with the whips, made arrangements whereby a run should be ensured on the occasion of the Wykem Cross meet-a border fixture, when sneering visitors from the neighbouring hunt would be present.)

   a- For a remuneration a gentleman was found willing to take an early morning walk in company with a member of the fish tribe.
   b- There was a hello on the far side of Wykeham wood, hounds poured out of the covert' in a solid mass.  A phenominal scent'
   c- Straight as the crow flies they sped to Hawsham, where a check occurred, he appeared to have run through the stable yard of "The Green Goat" but they soon picked up the line in the road beyond.
   d- And made the pace a cracker, as far as the Old Gate House Inn on the Becton road with hardly a pause.
   e- They took the line along the highroad for nearly three miles never halting till Slotby village was reached.
   f- Where they came to a sudden stop opposite "The Bell."
   g- The whole village was searched and nothing could be seen of the missing fox - but
   h- Hounds look great interest in a tipsy rascel whom they discovered sleeps in an epty stable behind "The Bell".  "Go away you blank feuls!" he shouts "Go away! I'm goin' ter 'are it-hic - toasted for me tea!.
