Big Game Shooting in South Africa.- Some Heavy Bags in the Vryburg District, Cape Colony. 1906.

   a- Mr. Knoetze, who with his party secured 4 hartebeeste and some springbok.
   b- Mr. W. Crosbie, wgo returned with his party of sixteen guns from the Mashowing River with 4 hartebeeste, 30 antelope (springbok, steinbok, and duiker), and 330 birds.
   c- Messer. Hornby and Dunbar succeeded in bagging 3 blue wildebeeste (gnu), 1 hartebeeste, and 19 antelopes in the Kgokgole Valley.  (The wildebeeste are seen in the foreground of the photo.)
   d- Mr. Harvey Smith's party, in two trips, bagged 5 hartebeeste, and a great quantity of antelopes, birds, and hares, and some Jackals.  Mr. Smith has had a favourite gun 28 years, and has fired on an average 3,000 rounds per season ;  his biggest bag was 836 for two guns in ten days.  He is sixty years of age and a keen sportsman.

A drought which occurred some time back in the north-western parts of South Africa indirectly did a good turn to sportsmen, and it has caused numbers of large game from the Kalahari Desert to seek water close to the habitations of men.  At Vryburg, Bechuanaland, some heavy bags were made, the proportion of game being specially noticeable.  In addition to the above, Sergeant Proctor, C. P. H., and Field-Cornet Stuart secured a splendid bag in the district of Morokwen (about 126 miles N. W. of Vryburg),  consisting of 1 koodoo, 2 wildebeeste, 1 gemsbok, 1 hartebeeste, and a large number of birds of different kinds, guinea fowl being most plentiful.  Vryburg is a short day's journey by rail from the Kimberley diamond fields.

Condition is Very Good.
