The excavating work at Pompeii goes on quietly and continuously, but nevertheless, it will be another fifty years before the whole of this ancient Campanian city can be dug up if the present rate of progress is not accelerated.  The workmen are now engaged in a quarter of the city that contained the houses of some of the most wealthy of its inhabitants.  Some of the houses which have already been brought to light in this quarter are planned and decorated in a different style to those which are to be seen elsewhere, consequently there has lately been a marked reawakening of public interest in the excavations.  The fact is demonstrated by the increased number of visitors who pass through the entrance gate, among whom in the course of a season are to be found representatives of nearly every civilised race in the world.  The Italian Government keeps control of the whole place, but it is too poor to spend money thereon.  The entrance fee charged to each visitor forms the fund employed for all purposes, such as properly guarding and preserving the place and for paying the wages of the men and boys engaged in clearing away the ashes and pumice under which the greater portion of the ill-fated city still lies buried.  The Government do all they possibly can to attract visitors to this most interesting place.  Guides who speak several languages are provided, and lately chairs with porters have been added, so that invalids or those too weak to incur the fatigue of walking round the place, can be carried for a small charge. The last convenience is one of which ladies now eagerly avail themselves.
