Half-a-mile west of the city of Shigatse is the monastery of Tashi-lunpo, which is far finer, especially in its interior, than the Potala or anything at Lhassa.  Its chief, the Tashi Lama, has succeeded the Dalai Lama. He is a young man of twenty-three.
