1- Charles Smith.
The retirement of Mr. A. E. KEMBLE from County cricket, left an opening in the Lancashire Eleven for a wicket keeper of ability.  The position was filled by C. SMITH, in the later matches of last season, with no small credit.  Nor were his only successes as a stumper.  As a batsman, he was of use on more than one important occasion, notable in the match against Surrey, at the Oval, when he very nearly won the game for Lancashire.  With any amount of pluck, he takes fast bowling as well as slow, and where there is anything like a chance of stumping rarely fails.  If hardly to be classed as a first-rate batsman, never lacks nerve, and is generally to be relied on at a crisis.
