In March, 1682, a fire which broke out in the Royal Stables-or residence-at Newmarket caused Charles II. to leave the races for London earlier than was expected, and thus upset the plot in preparation at the Rye House to assassinate the King on his return journey.  The merry monarch lived to execute some of the supposed conspirators and to fine others, but the Duke of monmouth, to secure whose succession the scheme was laid, went unharmed.

Condition is Very Good, with the usual fold down the middle, four small staple holes. and
