"Instinct," at the Duke of York's Theatre. 1912.

   a- The servant, Walker (Mr. Tom Mowbray), tells the famous surgeon, Bradford Mandover (Mr. C. Aubrey Smith), that Mrs. Mandover has a liaison with Walker's master, Mr. Hatherton, a dying poet of twenty-one.  Mandover thereupon orders the spiteful tale-bearing servant out of the house.
   b- The confession.- Mrs. Mandover (Miss Lilian Braithwaite) telling her furious husband that it is true the sickly young Hatherton loves her, and that she is inclined to think she loves him-out of pity.  In reality, she loves him from maternal solicitude, for she herself is childless. Mandover does not yet know that the lover is at that moment lying on the other side of the closed door of his wife's room, in a swoon brought on by a haemorohage, and that he demands the surgeon's immediate help
   c- The test.- Mandover's brother (Mr. Norman McKeown) and his wife implore him to use his skill to save the fast-ebbing life of young Hatherton, but he refuses. He says that at such an hour his savage instincts of vengeance must rule, while the acquired leanings to humanity must fall from him like a cloak. At sight of the youth, however, the savage gives way to the doctor, and he calls for his case of instruments.
