Nancy is the penniless Dancing mistress at Down House, a finishing school for girls near Brighton, and is much bullied by Miss Pindrop, the principal of Down House, much loved by the lively pupils, who are taught by her to dance "Porcupine Patrols" when they should be learning stately minuets, and is also entirely adored by Teddy Cavanagh, a rising young aeroplanist.
