With the Tirah Field Force : The Last Stand of the Northamptons in the Retreat from Saran San. 1898.

For Sale is a Double Page from "The Graphic, January 1st, 1898," showing a Drawing by Frank Dadd, from a Sketch by Lieutenant W. M. R. Brown, who was the First to Discover the Scene of the Disaster, called "With the Tirah Field Force : The Last Stand of the Northamptons in the Retreat from Saran Sar."

The Reconnaissance up the Saran Sar Pass was made by a mixed brigade, consisting of two batteries and four regiments.  The Position was taken i the Morning at eleven o'clock with only five casualties.  The retirement was ordered at 2.15.  The casualties occurred, for the enemy at once emerged from the woods, and the Northamptons has one man killed and eleven wounded at once.  The removal of the wounded was most difficult, the ground being to precipitous for strethers, and the foot of the hill was only reached at 5 p.m.  The Northamptons retired along a nullah, and it was here in the dusk that the greatest number of casualties occurred.  The troops reached camp at eight p.m., and it was only after their arrival that it was known that an officer, Lieutenant Macintire, and twelve men of the Northamptons were missing. Of the missing, eleven dead bodies, including that of the officer, were recovered next morning, and it was evident from the positions of the bodies that the little party had made a last, desperate stand, and sold their lives dearly.
