"General Blood and the 1st Brigade marched southwards from Tursak on January 15th. Shortly after leaving the village we had to ford a branch of the Barandu River, close to a water-mill. It was a frosty morning, and wreaths of steam rose from the surface of the stream.  When the 20th Punjab Infantry arrived at the crossing, some of the men removed their sandals, and waded with bare feet through the icy-cold water, while others climbed over the roof of the mill.  The Bunerwal proprietor of the mill stood at his door and gazed open-mouthed at the troops as they passed".
