      b- A Veteran Race-goer : Colonel Palmer, brother of the late M.P. for Jarrow, Sir C. Palmer, and the oldest spectator on the course.

Though scarcely a "smart" function, the Plate is generally a rendezvous for all grades of Tyneside Societys. The race this year, like that of the Southern meetings, presented a surprise, for the Plate was won by an outsider, Killigrew, and not by the heavily supported Bibiani.
