Mr. Asquith's Budget, which was introduced on Thursday, April 18, created an unusual amount of interest. The reduction of the income tax on earned incomes under £2,000 affects no fewer than 900,000 people. The 1s. tax has been in force from April 6, 1904 ; previous to that the tax had reached its highest point, that is, 1s. 3d. on July 4, 1902. Sir Robert Peel was the first modern chancellor to apply the tax, March 1842.
