If anything could show the progress made in Egypt and the preservation of its antiquity amid all our modernity it is the fact that the tombs of the Kings of Thebes near Luxor, 450 miles from Cairo, are lighted by electricity. This mummy, representing Amenophis II. of the 18th Dynasty, is in a sarcophagus. The chamber is a considerable depth underground and is richly decorated with paintings on wall, pillars, and ceiling. In a side chamber are three other mummies representing a man, a woman, and a child.
