Mr. Edward Hugh Stewart Sothern is the elder surviving son of Edward Sothern, the creator of Lord Dundreary, and though he was born in New Orleans in 1859 he is really British, for his father was an Englishman and his mother was the daughter of a Galway clergyman. All of old Sothern's children went on stage. Lytton, the eldest, died in 1887 ; Sam, the youngest has been in England for many years ; while Eva was also on the stage before her marriage. The father intended him to become a Painter, and he studied drawing in England, but like most actors' sons he drifted on to the stage, where he made his debut in New York in September 1879. Strange to say he will play in a round of characters, the most successful of all being Hauptmann's strange play, "The Sunken Bell," which has has been played in this country only in German.
