Harding Stanley Giffard, Ist Earl of Halsbury, was born in 1825, being the son of Dr. Stanley Giffard. He was educated at Oxford, called to the Bar in 1850, sat for Launceston 1877-85, and was Lord Chancellor for ten years (1895-1905) during the tenure of the Late Conservative Government. Curiously enough Lord Halsbury in his pedigree in "Burke" says that his name, Giffard, signifies "the Liberal." Sir George Reid, the artist, was for some years President of the Royal Scottish Academy.
