For Sale is a Double Page Drawing by F. Matania taken from "The Sphere," May 9th, 1908, showing "A Hot Holiday - Tourists Climbing and being Carried to the Top of Mount Vesuvius."

Vesuvius has been one of the wonders of the World since its first eruption in A.D. 79. In 472 its ashes are said to have alighted in Constantinople, and from first to last it has done an enormous amount of damage. In 1844 the Observatory was erected upon it for the benefit of science, and in 1880 the railway was opened to satisfy tourists. The disturbance of April 1906, effected a great change, the graceful outline of the cone being destroyed and the mountain converted into a hump-backed mound of distinctly lower elevation. An ascent is very interesting whether the mountain "works" or is in repose.
