A Charming Gainsborough : Miss Haverfield, as Etched by Armand Mathey. 1907

For Sale is a Full Page taken from "The Sphere," January 19th, 1907, showing a Picture of "A Charming Gainsborough : Miss Haverfield, as Etched by Armand Mathey."

This pretty picture by Gainsborough hangs in the Wallace Collection, but a brilliant etching of it has been executed by Armand Mathey for the Dowdeswells, who kindly permit us to reproduce it. The little lady belonged to a family who had lived at Kew for a hundred years (1730 - 1830). Indeed, one of the family has property there to this day, and a street is named after them. She was the grandaunt of Dr. F.J. Haverfield of Christ Church, Oxford, who is the greatest authority on Roman Britain. Gainsborough also did a pastel portrait of Miss Haverfield. She married the Rev. James Wyld, Blunsden St. Andrew, Wilts, and died in 1810. She had several children, the youngest being the late Lady Harding. Miss Haverfield, her brother (a colonel who served in the Peninsular War), and mother were friends of the family of George III., in particular of the Princess Elizabeth, who married the Prince of Hesse-Homburg.
