A Great Gainsborough from the Kann Collection - The Charming Lady Sheffield. 1901

For Sale is a Full Page taken from "The Sphere," September 28th, 1907, called "A Great Gainsborough from the Kann Colection," showing a print of "The Charming Lady Sheffield."

This portrait by Gainsborough, forming part of the Kann collection bought by the Duveens of Old Bond Street, is said to be worth £15,000. The subject of the portrait is described in the Kann catalogue as "Lady Sophia Charlotte Sheffield," but she was apparently only Lady Sheffield, being the wife of Sir John Sheffield, the 2nd baronet, of Normanby. Charlotte Sophia Digby, as she was before her marriage, was the daughter of the Dean of Durham. She married Sir John Sheffield in 1784, four years before Gainsborough's death, and died in 1835.
