For Sale is a Double Page drawing by Charles Wyllie showing "The Making of the Mersey - An Allegorical Study of the Growth of Liverpool."

The great Pageant in honour of the 700th, anniversary of the foundation of Liverpool took place this week. This picture presents one of the aspects of the rise of the city to the importance it now occupies, namely, the growth of its shipping. It was the discovery of America that largely made Liverpool what it is, and the people, instinct with northern energy, have made far more of their river than London has done of the Thames. Mr. Charles Wyllie gives a vision of Liverpool as it is and Liverpool as it was so that the contrast may be presented all the more strikingly.  The picture at the top of the page shows the castle and the tiny stream with its small ships and boats with the Abbey that alone constituted Birkenhead on the other side of the river. The Larger picture shows exactly the same site-to-day amid the transformations of progress. The stream has widened out into a great waterway, and the mud banks round the old castle (which has vanished) have given place to magnificent quays and docks at which the biggest ocean liners can load with ease.
