A Great Picture by Sir Henry Raeburn : "A Boy and Rabbit."

For Sale is a Full Page from "The Sphere," August 3, 1907 showing "A Great Picture by Sir Henry Raeburn," called "A Boy and Rabbit."

The picture represents Master Henry Raeburn Inglis, son of Henry David Inglis, advocate and author, and was Raeburn's diploma work, 1821. This reproduction is from the mezzotint by J. Cother Webb published by Dowdeswell and Dowdeswells.
Sir Henry Raeburn was born in 1756, but it was not until 1814 that he sent his first contribution to the English Academy, to which he was at once elected as an associate, attaining full membership in the following year. Long before that, however, his touch had been recognised as that of a master, so that the honours of the Royal Academy were gained without any sort of canvass. In 1822 when George IV. visited Edinburgh he knighted Raeburn, remarking, it is said, that he would have made him a baronet but for the slur on the memory of Reynolds. He did not enjoy his honours long, for he died in the following year and was burried in the Episcopal church of St. John's within a few yards of passers-by in the streets.
