To-day July 6 the Sun, the Earth, and Mars are in a straight line with one another, and the two latter will approach closer together by several millions of miles than has been the case for many years. Astronomers are therefore busy observing the face of the ruddy planet. The nearest point, however, will not be reached until next week, when of July 13 the two planets come together as closely as their orbits will allow. The possibilities of communication with the planet have often been mooted. A distinguished French artist has drawn here his conception of the scene when future man converses with the builders of the "Canals".
